During
the off season Tom is a full time wildfowl artist and has been creating
his art since 1987. It all started in the salt marshes of Long Island.
In those days Cornicelli carved decoys for hunting. After being urged by
his friend and world class carver Captain Fred Muhs to attend some of
the local decoy shows he began meeting other enthusiastic bird carvers.
Tom began to pick up lots of new ideas and technical tips ,his work
quickly became competitive at the " world class" level of competition.
He has placed in the numerous shows throughout the country such as the
Ward Foundation's World Carving Competition, Mid-Atlantic Decoy Show at
the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, New England Expo, Pacific Flyway
Wildfowl Art Festival, U.S. National, just to mention a few and
continues to take Best of Show honors. At the prestigious Ward Foundation
2003 World Carving Competition Tom was awarded "Best in Show" World
Gunning Pairs Division and took it home again in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
His highly collectable gunners are in numerous states and three
countries. As a member of Ducks Unlimited, Tom Cornicelli's work has
raised thousands of dollars for the conservation of wetlands in the
U.S.. He has also been honored by the Smithsonian Institute and the Ward
Foundation Mid-Atlantic Invitational.
